 LESSONS DO HELP

    By Carol Gerlach
March 9, 2008

Let us assume you're an aspiring student of the game.

Your adventure begins by finding a reasonably good partner who plays a similar style or game system.  At this point, you build a small library touching on all important 21st Century bidding and playing techniques.  Add to this three or four software programs by World Class Players, take some lessons, or enlist the services of a professional, which happens to be in abundance in our bridge community.

Something to think about!  When making the decision to try lessons, what criteria are you using; playing lessons from one of our excellent pro's or playing with your mentor or teacher trying to absorb tips when they point out errors made on a particular play.

This aspiring student has tried them all and by far the best learning experience for me has come from Allan DeSerpa's series on Saturday morning at his Fireside Chats at the Ace of Clubs.

Starting with "PLAY-OF-THE-HAND", this 4-part lecture began with "play the hand mentally before touching the first card" and "form a line of play".  After whizzing through four weeks of stretching the mind beyond where you thought it could go.....Series #2 began.  DEFENSE, a topic most of us struggle with.  Allan's opening statement, "the starting point in defense is COMMUNICATION" and captured his students' undivided attention.

My reason for writing this letter is to recognize and thank Allan for sharing his views, experiences and most of all, his superb techniques that lead an aspiring student toward being a serious player at the table.  More than winning points, my ambition is to sit down and play against some of the Valley's finest and walk away knowing I kicked butt!  Now that's what I call WINNING BRIDGE.  My game has improved, how about yours?

Thanks Allan for great teaching.

A labor of love!
