As we had our last North American Pair Qualifying game this afternoon,
the final tally is in! As of: 8-30-2008
VERN HOOVER won 37.01 masterpoints in the NAP Qualifying games in the east Valley throughout the summer!
and played in 38 sanctioned games, including all the ones at the Ace of Clubs, all in Unit 351, in our greater east Valley. He averaged almost 1 point per game. We at the Ace of Clubs really enjoyed having him at our Club for these special games and I personally feel I have a new friend and partner. He had his best and most frequent successful results playing with his all time best pard, SUE FOSTER. Sue didn't play in as many of the games but had to have done very well in these games as well.
Vern Hoover did it again, today, Aug. 25. He brought me in today. He won 2.33 points in the NAP qualifying game at the Ace of Clubs.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ARLENE O'LEARY for making Life Master at the Desert Empire Regional! She only needed a couple of gold points and she earned them in the KO's. You make us VERY proud, Arlene. She wrote me the sweetest email to thank me for sharing in her joy and told me that she didn't even begin to play bridge until after she retired and believed the feat of Life Master was going to be beyond her. Well, now, Arlene, do you believe in yourself a little more? There is nothing we can't do if we set our minds to it.
Steve Adeleson wrote this wonderful article about his best friend and partner of many years, Dave Zapatka. The title refers to "The Making of a Champion!" Click right here and you can read all about it.
KEN BOYD IS "GLAMOUR KEN." Photo will be added tonight after the SWISS teams at the Desert Empire Regional. It will be in the Photo section. Oops, I was told to wait to publish his picture because they are sending a better one. NOW, it is HERE
and in the PHOTOS section.

OUR CUTE KEN IN HIS NOTORIOUS VEST!
NEWS FLASH FROM THE REGIONAL!
At 4:50 p.m. today, Thursday, August 21!
JOYCE-ANN BRECLAW
and
SHERRIE HOLLIDAY
win the 0-199 Open Pairs this afternoon, with a terrific 65% game. AND, they each got a trophy for their victory. All of their hard work learning and improving their game and their partnership together, just paid off big time. You can't possibly know just how thrilled and proud we are of them.
CONGRATULATIONS, JOYCE and SHERRIE!
(Bring your trophies to the Club so we can see them)
JUST IN! I have been checking daily and even as late as this morning with no final results, but got an email from Steve Adelson this morning (Wed., August 20) that the results are in on the overall STaC winners. Although DAVE ZAPATKA won more points in the most recent STaCs (40.02 compared to 32) in our recent summer STaC games, he came in second to Mark Itabashi, who won 48. Great run, DAVE. Steven didn't even mention that he was Dave's partner for most of these games, and my guess is that he is 3rd overall with about 38 points. Dave played in the STaC Swiss at the Ace of Clubs and earned a little more than Steven. Great going guys! We are looking forward to your next STaC competition in December. Again, like I said before, these guys are good and you make us very proud.
Vern Hoover has supported every single NAP Qualifying game throughout our east Valley. He has played with Lou, Sue, Sam, Eileen and me that I know of. He has done very well in these games, although I do not know his actual point total. I will ask him tomorrow night in yet another of our NAP games (Thursday, 8-14-08 at 7:00). Vern is the person who gets the reports from each of the games, and keeps track of who has qualified. He also coordinates the special games schedule for all of the east Valley clubs so that we know where we can go to earn extra points. Thank you very much, Vern!
Wednesday STAC games: Dave Zapatka and Steve Adelson are at it again. They were first overall in the Western Conference on Monday night and earned over 13 points. They played this morning and only had 53%; this afternoon at the Ace of Clubs, they had 63%; and, tonight at the Ace of Clubs and had 74%, (wonder what would have happened if we had had a midnight game? 84%? 74% will likely win in the Wednesday evening Western Conference overalls again. Dave won over 32 points and came in first overall in the May STAC games and Steve was 5th overall. These guys are GOOD!
Dave and Steve did win the whole Western Conference STAC game playing out of the Ace of Clubs on Wednesday night! Congratulations! They are playing Saturday morning in Sun Lakes, and again at 1:00 at the Ace of Clubs. Then, again in the Pot Luck Swiss STAC on Sunday. Keep it up guys.
You can find all the STAC results by going to this website's Bridge Links, and clicking on the Western Conference link. All the results are there. Others from our area AND from the Ace of Clubs, have done well and you can see all of their names. David Rankin, Ron Fischer, Sam, Sylvia, Mayre, etc. etc. Sunday is going to be fun as the STAC games finale'; the end of an exciting week!!
Sylvia DeSerpa and Sam had a 68% game this afternoon, which will place somewhere in the high overalls. Congratulations! They came in 5th! Yay!
